Orlando Political Observer - Olszewski and VanderLey spar over Boyd at BusinessForce County Commission Debate

On Friday afternoon, the contenders for Orange County Commission District 1, Winter Garden Commissioner Bobby Olszewski and Project Development Manager Betsy VanderLey met on stage at the BusinessForce Candidate Debate in Orlando, to make their case to the voters on why they should be they should be the next leader elected representative from West Orange County. The most intense exchanges during the debate concerned the current Commissioner representing District 1 on the board.
To lead off the discussion, Olszewski reflected on his record in Winter Garden and his experience managing development in the municipality. VanderLey encouraged smart growth that did not inhibit businesses and wanted to create an ideal environment for entrepreneurship.
Both candidates were asked about a recent measure by the County Charter Review Commission that would open up tourism development tax spending or TDT. VanderLey appreciated the added vetting process to projects, while Olszewski would respect the will of voters when the measure is put on the ballot this November. Both candidates were also bearish on rising property taxes in the region.
Olszewski continued saying he would not vote for a tax increase at the county level and promoted “doing more with less.” He pledged to find a clear return of investment on projects that went before the county, maintain the level of public safety services, and wanted to add transparency to the office...read more
